On December 16th, 1944, the Germans launched their last major offensive
in the West, in what would soon be known as the Battle of the Bulge.
Trying to cross the Meuse River, take Antwerp, and split the Allied
armies, they hoped to force a negotiated peace settlement. By Christmas
Eve they had come close to their initial objectives….
The 3rd Air Division, in the largest mission of the war, made a direct tactical
assault on airfields in the Frankfurt area. Crews were told that their
route was planned on purpose to go directly over the ground troops’
positions for moral purposes.
On December 24th, the 3rd Air
Division assembled over England. The first group, numbering 1,400 heavy
bombers and escorted by 726 fighters attacked the airfields; the second
group of 634 bombers was supported by about 200 fighters and struck
communication facilities west of the Rhine
And in the Lead B-17G, on his 30th mission, rode Brigadier General Fred W. Castle.
