Captain Henry T. Elrod destroyed two enemy airplanes in a vicious
fight over the island and became the first man to sink a warship,
the Japanese destroyer Kisaragi, with small caliber bombs delivered
from a fighter aircraft.
On November 8, 1946, his widow was presented with the Medal of Honor,
posthumously awarded to her husband for hisheroic actions during the
last bitter days of the defense of Wake.
Major Elrod was initially buried on Wake Island, but was reinterred
in Arlington National Cemetery, Fort Myer, Virginia, in October 1947.

"On June 7, 1942 he boarded carrier Eagle in Gibraltar, with brand new Spitfires Mk Vc destined for Malta.1 Two days later, Beurling took off from the deck of Eagle for dangerous and long flight over the Mediterranean. He arrived safely at Takali, a dusty piece of airstrip in the middle of the island. As soon as he stopped taxing, group of mechanics unceremoniously pulled him out of precious fighter, immediately starting to refuel it and load its guns. Disoriented, he glanced around and found only dust, ruins, craters and bunch of miserably looking people, with war written all over their faces. Finally, Beurling found his place."
